What is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)?

The inspection and or testing that is required by law of all portable electrical appliances to assess their operational safety and the safety of personnel operating the equipment.

What is classed as a "Portable Appliance"?

Generally speaking any item of electrical equipment that has a power lead with a plug that is intended to be connected to the mains electricity supply.

When should my appliances get tested?

Under the regulations no specific time frames have been given, guidelines are based on the type of equipment from 3 months to 48 months depending on its operating environment.

Who does PAT Testing apply to?

Any electrical appliances used in a workplace or an area that is accessible to the public fall under this regulation. An example of some of these work and public environments include:

  • Landlords & Rented Accommodation
  • Construction Sites
  • Schools & Colleges
  • Retail Shops
  • Offices
  • Hotels
  • Industrial Workplaces
  • Commercial Kitchens
  • Gyms

There is a legal requirement to keep any electrical items that have the potential to cause injury maintained to a safe standard. PAT Testing helps ensure you meet this requirement and provide documentation to prove it.
